Rift: Storm Legion is the first expansion to be released for Rift. Rift, for a long time, has been seen as the largest competitor to Blizzard’s dominant MMORPG World of Warcraft. The expansion builds on and develops the existing game, by introducing a range of new elements and options for experienced Rift players.
The introduction of dimensions, zones that are separate from the questing areas of the game, allow players to hide away. Each dimension is fully customisable with a range of options to choose from, thus turning a simple piece of landscape into a player’s own personal hideaway or safe haven.
Guests can enter the personal dimension and view what the player has created if given permission. Each dimension is based around a particular landscape located throughout the rift and is reachable at any time between levels 10 and 60. Players can possess multiple dimensions.
Rift Storm Legion, essentially does for Rift what Burning Crusade did for WoW.
The expansion introduces new gear designed to compensate for the recent increase in level cap, and also introduces interesting new equipment, in the form of capes. Why they did not exist in the game previously, nobody knows, as they certainly help improve the statistics of each character. They also make characters considerably better looking.
The expansion also introduces four new ascended classes — the improved and final form of your character’s class, (ie. warrior, rogue, mage, and cleric). These are designed to look good and fulfil even more roles throughout the Rift community.
One of the biggest improvements is the inclusion of two new continents to explore, together with a new capital city which is, by far, one of the most impressive cities seen in the game. Unlike other MMO’s, you do not have to be at a ridiculously high level to access this area. However, unless you are a masochist and enjoy being killed by an NPC with one hit, it is highly recommended that you stay away until you are strong enough to handle the powerful new enemies.
The expansion also introduces new content such as quests, dungeons and exciting scenarios which pit players against enemies who are more intense to fight. Quests maintain the same feel they did prior to the expansion, but now assist in the exploration of the new areas and help players to uncover the world that is laid out before them.
Apart from these innovations, not much else has changed in the older areas. New players are still able to experience the same quests and features that veteran players initially played at launch.
